At BioCanRx, we are incredibly proud of our HQP and their dedication to cancer immunotherapy research. Whether they are working on viruses in the lab or examining the socioeconomic barriers to adopting certain treatments in Canada, each one plays a unique role in strengthening our network and expertise in immunotherapy.
BioCanRx is invested in our HQP by providing them with both the training and skills they need to be leaders in academia and industry.
1. Tell us about yourself. Give us a brief background. Who are you? Where did you go to school and what is your association to BioCanRx?
During my childhood, I had the pleasure of growing up in Tehran, Iran—a captivating city nestled close to majestic mountains. The vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery of the area provided a wonderful backdrop to my formative years. After completing my bachelor’s degree at Tehran University, I pursued further academic excellence at Tarbiat Modares University for my master’s studies. Seeking to expand my horizons and embrace new opportunities, I made the life-changing decision to move to Canada to pursue a Ph.D. in Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen’s University. My academic journey was made possible through the prestigious Vanier Award scholarship, a testament to my dedication and passion for research. My commitment to excellence and unwavering dedication to my research earned me the honor of receiving the esteemed Governor Gold Medal, recognizing my exceptional achievements.
I feel incredibly privileged to have pursued my postdoctoral research under the mentorship of the renowned leader in cancer immunotherapy, Dr. John Bell. His guidance and expertise have been invaluable, shaping not only my scientific knowledge but also my understanding of networking and tackling challenges in the field. Working closely with Dr. Bell during my postdoc has been transformative. His dedication to excellence and groundbreaking research has been inspiring, and I’ve learned a great deal from observing his scientific approach and problem-solving strategies. The stimulating research environment has cultivated in me a profound appreciation for conducting impactful science. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve gained under Dr. Bell’s supervision is the importance of networking and collaboration. Witnessing how he fosters meaningful connections within the scientific community has shown me the immense potential of collective efforts in advancing cancer immunotherapy. Through collaboration, I’ve come to recognize the power of teamwork and collective knowledge in addressing complex scientific challenges. Moreover, Dr. Bell has instilled in me a keen curiosity and the courage to tackle the next big questions in cancer immunotherapy. Emphasizing innovative thinking and breaking boundaries, he has encouraged me to be bold in my research pursuits. This mindset has empowered me to approach scientific problems from fresh angles, aiming to make groundbreaking discoveries that drive the field forward. Reflecting on my postdoctoral journey with Dr. John Bell fills me with gratitude for the wealth of knowledge and experience he has imparted to me. The skills and insights gained during this time will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for my future scientific endeavors. I am determined to build upon this foundation, making meaningful contributions to the field of cancer immunotherapy and continuing the legacy of impactful research established by my mentor, Dr. John Bell. The impact of my scientific work under Dr. John Bell has allowed me to be the recipient of top provincial, national and international awards. These include my being receipt being selected for a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, Worton Researcher in Training Award, CRS next generation of scientists and CIHR Early Career Investigator award (awarded to the highest ranking Early- Career Investigator in CIHR’s Project Grant competition)
As a testament to my engagement and involvement in the scientific community, I had the privilege of being associated with BioCanRx. My active participation was supported by the HQP (Highly Qualified Personnel) travel award, which allowed me to attend the Summit for Cancer Immunotherapy Conference twice—an experience that enriched my knowledge and broadened my network of like- minded professionals.
2. Where do you work now, and what is your position?
Currently, I hold the position of Assistant Professor at Université de Sherbrooke, where I am establishing my own lab with a primary focus on translational research using synthetic biology (read more about our research, Currently, hiring master and PhD students).
3. What does a typical workday look like for you?
I wake up at 6 am to help my wife prepare the kids for daycare. After having breakfast, I leave the house at 7 and drop off the kids at daycare. I arrive at work around 8 am. Firstly, I spend 30 minutes working on French, and then I dedicate the next 30 minutes to answering emails. The rest of my day involves various tasks, such as meeting with other professors, interacting with students, troubleshooting experiments, and working on grants, among other responsibilities.
At 4 pm, I leave my office and head to the gym for a 30-minute workout session. Once done, I return home to help my wife for about 3 hours, playing with the kids, preparing food, and getting them ready for bed. Later in the evening, I spend 30 minutes working on improving my French skills, followed by spending 2-3 hours with my wife, cooking together, and watching movies.
This daily routine keeps me balanced and allows me to manage both my professional and personal life effectively.
I am so lucky to live in a small city like Sherbrooke and help me to save a lot of time due to lack of traffic.
